Communications Consultant, Award-Winning Author, Nonprofit Founder/CEO

An award-winning communications consultant, author, and screenwriter, Kristene (K.N.) Smith is the driving force behind her consultancy’s unique marketing thrusts, mastery of communications, creative direction, and diversity strategies. Her precision in forecasting communications platforms shapes each campaign uniquely from the next and positions her clients as premiere innovators in their respective fields. She understands consumer and lifestyle trends and how brands must engage consumers for market share, loyalty, and relationship building. She is recognized for her creative abilities as well as her understanding of both general and multi-ethnic audiences.

Kristene is a sought-after writer, creative director, and strategist behind successful campaigns in development, mental health, independent living, government, public safety, education, entertainment, and other sectors. A former freelance writer for Essence Magazine, she’s facilitated numerous marketing, advertising, and brand design programs for public and private institutions. These include the University of California at Davis, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the State of California, the Richmond Children’s Foundation, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, New Faze Development, the Sacramento City Unified School District, the Central Coast Center for Independent Living, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Police Department, and the County and City of Sacramento, among others.

Gratefully, she received the California Black Chamber of Commerce Ron Brown Memorial “Small Business of the Year" award; California State Senate recognition for marketing excellence; and the “Destiny" award from PWOE, the Progressive Women of Excellence. Kristene has also been named one of Sacramento Magazine’s “20 Women We Admire” and has been featured in the Sacramento Observer Newspaper and the Sacramento Bee Newspaper throughout her 20-year career.

Kristene is also an award-winning author, publisher, and screenwriter. Most noted for her current fiction work, The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses™, she advocates for literacy and educational programs in communities throughout the world. Her creative, lyrical flair sweeps across pages that twist, turn, and grind through elements of action-adventure and urban fantasy in diverse, exciting, edge-of-your-seat narratives.

Her nonprofit venture, Mental Health California™, is her signature community project, one that is personal considering she is a younger sibling to an older sibling with mental health challenges. The organization educates and inspires Californians across the lifespan with news and information on health, mental health, and mental-wellness through publications, training, new media, and special programs that change lives.

Kristene holds a degree in Family and Consumer Science and connects with audiences through magazine, newspaper, television, and new media appearances (including the Fox, ABC, and UPN networks, and Redbook Magazine, among others) giving advice on design, style, and business communications. She has a global audience from California to New York City and London to Bangkok, Thailand. Kristene is also a gardening enthusiast who makes all kinds of homemade ice cream and other treats. She lives with her family in California.

“Congratulations on being selected as the recipient of the California Black Chamber of Commerce’s 2001 Northern California Small Business of the Year. It is indeed an honor to be recognized as one of the premiere marketing firms here in the Sacramento region. Your clientele, which includes the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, Sacramento City Unified School District, and the Sacramento Fire Department, among others, is a reflection of your commitment to the Sacramento community at large. On the several occasions we’ve had a chance to work together, I have been so very impressed by your talent, energy and dedication. I especially appreciate all the work you did on the District 6 Student Art Contest. Congratulations again on a job well done.”
